Solas - Training Centers and Schools, Requirements, Fees and Schedule
Safety Of Life At Sea (meaning) SOLAS is one of the basic safety training (BST) for a maritime worker or seaman.
It is a pre requisite requirement before you can become a full pledged mariner in today's shipping and seaman job industry.

Furthermore, the IMO or International Marine Organization defines it as "the most important of all international treaties concerning the safety of merchant ships". |

Without a certification from duly licensed and MTC / MARINA accredited training centers and schools in the Philippines, you cannot sign up with any form of contract to work in a vessel.
SOLAS Requirements
It is very easy to qualify to take and study this short-term 8-days course for seafarers in the Philippines. All you have to do is to pass certain qualification standards and a few IDs and you are good to go and enroll to a nearby accredited training center. We have listed them below. Please see a picture of the actual / sample SOLAS certificate being issued upon finishing the basic seamans training (BST) which also happens to be a pre requisite to getting a seaman book or SIRB (seafarer's identification record book).
- most of the accredited training centers would require an early 2-3 day reservation seat wherein you will be required to pay in advance, the tuition fee for an 8-day training.
- must be at least high school graduate
- must possess a valid primary ID upon enrollment (SSS, LTO driver's license, GSIS, passport, school ID, company ID, NBI clearance, police clearance, NSO birth certificate and more)
- must be physically fit and have passed a medical checkup by a duly accredited clinic and have a medical certificate.
Training Center Accreditation
Apart from being required by the different training centers of SOLAS in the Philippines to comply with pre-qualifying requirements, as a student and enrollee to this course, one must understand that he deserves to know if a school or vocational learning institute is duly authorized to conduct such sensitive and major requirement for seafarers and mariners like the safety of life at sea course.
Therefore, we have listed below some important consideration before a seafarer enroll to take SOLAS from any school. This accreditation is what you must look for before you pay the tuition fee and have a seat reserved to study the short-term 8-day course.

- TESDA - Technical Education and Skills Development Authority
- PRC - Professional Regulation Commission
- ISO - International Organization for Standardization
- Accreditation from Association of Maritime Education and Training Institutions in Asia Pacific is a plus factor
Course Outline, Tuition Fee and Discounts
You read it right, most accredited training centers would allow discount when you enroll. The SOLAS training tuition fee would range from Php 4,500 - Php 5,000. Discounts would range from Php 250.00 - Php 500.00. I just had a niece enroll to the basic seaman training course and we paid Php4,500 with an endorsement coming from MARINA office giving us the 500 pesos discount upon enrollment this March 11, 2014.

On the other hand, if you are a student who want's to take SOLAS course in the Philippines to become a full pledged seaman, we suggest that you consult first with MARINA so you know your options. Their address is just above former Masagana Superstor in Kalaw corner Taft Avenue. I believe the building is now Savemore. Nevertheless, it is easy to find even without an address.
